And the award goes to….you
No, not a golden trophy for an Academy performance.
A spoon, a golden one, was the best I can offer,
and words that fail more often than not.
This is for you. You know who you are.
And you know others that are deserving
for one thing….the serving.
This is for your service in a time when everyone
is called.
You know who you are. You had a choice
and chose
to be more spoon-like.
Forks have precision and feed exclusivity.
They hold down while knives divide.
Not so with you. You hold the pieces and
the un-whole-y-ness. The unholy mess.
And add your heart and make it good or
good enough.
You give what you have to others.
You try not to waste a drop.
This spoon is for you.
You who served yourselves up as cups of soup
for patients and students and employers'
and children and parents. You know who
you are. You know what you did between exhaustion
and another morning. Your carpets died the color of tired.
You know those who have served, have been serving
mostly invisible.
This spoon is for you.
I know, it’s small. This one holds the morning sun.
I wanted you to have it.
Because of who you are and what you’ve done
with little fanfare.
This is for being a spoon, in my life,
in the lives of so many others.
You know who you are.
I just wanted to find a way today to
say thanks.
