Casting Bread by debgrant
I had a beloved English professor in college. At the end of each semester, she would invite her students to her office to pick up a free book from her collection. She was weeding out her overburdened shelves. When I thanked her, she said, “Just casting bread upon the waters, my dear, just casting bread.” I had to look it up later. I am not a memorize-the-Bible-chapter-verse kind of person. It was her way of living out the words in Ecclesiastes 11:1, the encouragement to give generously without worrying about what you will gain from it or what the people will do with what you give them.
As an artist and a writer, I am discovering that my style and spirit, mediums and methods circle around and through the puddles of my past. I have loved the combination of words with images. I had a poster on my bedroom wall in my growing up place. The poster was an abstract shape of a house at night, images of blue and green with a window glowing yellow from the inside out. The words on the poster said, “In my window, a little light will always keep shining. All may come in. The arms of a friend are waiting.” It was a quote from a pope. I wasn’t Roman Catholic. It was just a quote I liked. It held my hope of what I wanted a relationship with God to be. It held a hope of what I wanted from my friends. It help my hope of who I wanted to be for others in the world.
The photo posted here is a recent art piece I created. It is a combination of my love for colors, abstract images, and words. It reminded me of the poster from my youth and my beloved teacher casting her bread upon the waters of students most of whom she would never see again.
I am working on getting prints made of this piece. I want to offer them to you, ELOGOS readers, for free. My way of casting my bread upon the waters. Before I send it off to the printer, it would be helpful for me to know two things:
If you want one, what size would be most useful for you? A framable print? A card? A poster? I will take this information into consideration when I make the order.
If you want one, I will need your mailing address. You can send it by replying to this email(only I read these replies) or my other email address: revdeb@jazzwater.com
Peace,
Deb
I received mine today and it is wonderful. I really wish I could help with the cost. If so, let me know. Meanwhile, thank you for casting bread...
