Clutter
I have identified a few different ways to declutter. There are probably others, but these are my working three.
1. Crisis-Management: I have no clean forks. I can’t afford to have a broken leg from tripping over this crap. I cannot find ANYTHING.
2. Spark Joy: Having a way-too-happy coach offering advice involving creating a mountain of clutter on your bed. Listening for each piece of the mountain to make their claim to be saved.
3. Disaster Debris Pile: Temporarily ignore your grief. What catches your eye? Is it worth anything to you dirty and broken?
It is the Disaster Debris pile method that teaches me. I ache when the news outlets show images of people picking through:
· the charred remains of a home after a wildfire
· or damp, moldy piles of house guts after a hurricane or a flood
· or shredded pieces of someone else’s home on a lot where their home before the tornado used to be
· or a child’s bedroom frozen in time forever after a shooting
· or a town square shattered by bombs
It all makes me manage my clutter with a bit less angst, and considerably more tenderness. I know better now NOT to say, “That will never happen here.” I am falling in love with simplicity.
