Heather the Nurse by debgrant
After all the Covid vaccination questions:
Nurse: (puts on blue gloves and prepares the needle)
Nurse: Which arm? (Needle poised.)
Me: Right(Pull up my sleeve)
Nurse: Do you have any questions?
Me: What is your first name?
Nurse: Oh, I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you. It’s Heather. (she held up her ID badge dangling off her neck hidden in a fold of her scrubs. The needle still poised in her other hand)
Me: There is no sufficient way to thank you for what you are doing. I just want you to know that I will remember your name for the rest of my life.
Heather: (cries holding the needle in the air)
Heather: (still crying touches my left arm with her un-needled gloved hand)
Me: (Silently thinking maybe I should have waited until after the shot)
Heather: I am so sorry. I don’t know why I am so emotional. You will feel a little prick. The site might be a little sore later. (she gives me the shot.)
Me: Thank you, Heather.

Oh, Deb... This made me cry. What a poignant reminder that we need to know people's names... Names humanize us... I'll be sure to ask my nurse her/his name when I get my vaccine
This is so wonderful. I keep seeing these days how important and touching it is to really tell people how special they are to you. Well said.
