T.H. White in Once and Future King
put these words in Merlyn’s mouth when the adolescent who would become
King Arthur asked him, “What do you do for sadness?”
Merlyn said, “Learn something.”
It has been my golden thread, my lifeline that has pulled me out of a lifetime of abysses.
Can’t say it works for everyone…but so far, it has worked for me.
This week I learned what monarch butterfly eggs look like.
I learned that a certain species of jelly fish has no brain but has eyes which
they use to identify trees so that they can feed in the shallow waters.
I watched a person with about my body type….gut and butt and flappy arms….
circumnavigate the neighborhood pool while snorkeling. It was annoying but, I was happy to be around people. Happy enough to stay out of her way and not pee in the pool as she passed.
I learned that was goodness.
I learned again….for the bazillionth time….that we are all really messed up and
we either need to steer clear of each other or give each other a break and
timing
is everything.
I learned we have to relearn how we walk through the world…letting go of assumptions and judgements and leaning in
to listen to each other’s story and maybe learn something
and find ourselves curling our toes away from the abyss.
