Pockets
Pockets by debgrant
Joe Wise, a writer/singer of children’s songs, wrote a song called Pockets which my brain stores in its pockets and pulls out randomly, as brains often do.
The song is about a little kid with 5 pockets in his overalls and what he has in his pockets. According to the lyrics, the contents of his pockets is:
A nickel from my old uncle Zack, It’s so special, Got a indent on it with a great big buffalo
A big bar of peanut butter crunch…been in there for a month or so, I think I better eat it, After lunch
3 marbles, 2 buttons, and some jacks
A big brass key to I don’t know where
Some seeds I’m gonna plant in the sidewalk, In the cracks
My pet frog Harry with a slimy old body, And a couple salty crackers, He can munch
A needle and a thread…I’m gonna make a spread for my grandma’s bed and it only ‘otta take about a year or two.
My friend Mike who died recently worked on rebuilding houses that were damaged in storms. This week I remembered what Mike had in his pockets. He had dog biscuits. He loved his family. He loved his military buddies. He loved his co-workers in disaster response. He loved his neighbors near and far. And he loved dogs. Mike always had dog biscuits in his pockets.
I love dogs too. I have biscuits in my pockets and seeds. Pistachos are my parrot’s favorite.
I have a lot of little thingga-ma-bobs like the song goes….in my pockets. I dump my pockets into a shoebox and pull it out from time to time and let the memories dance around.
I like pockets. I like people who carry dog biscuits in their pockets just in case they happen upon a hungry stray. I like people who have cash at the ready for a tip or a donation - no matter the service or the cause. Pockets are for generosity and memories.
I will miss my friend, Mike. He was wealthy in all the ways that truly matter. He had room in is pockets and in his heart for those in need.
May God bless your pockets with tender memories, and songs, and gifts waiting to be given to friends or strangers.
Peace,
deb
