#smallmovesmatter by debgrant
In the 1997 movie “Contact,” an early scene shows the main character as a little girl listening for signs of life by spinning the dial on her ham radio over and over. Her scientist father encourages and guides her with the words that will follow her into her own scientific career and life journey. He says, “Small moves, Ellie, small moves.”
I remember that scene when I get overwhelmed by the project before me. I especially remember it when I am stunned by the enormity of the needs before humanity, especially for healing, addressing injustice, and poverty. I get paralyzed by my limitations, my singularity, my physical stamina, my inadequacy to the task, my access to powerful agents of change. Almost daily it seems, I am faced with the choice of remaining immobile. And then I hear that Spirit nudge. Small moves, Deb, small moves.
I believe in a Spirit that prefers movement. I laugh when I consider that many dear friends I have in my life are people who run or walk or move and have encouraged me. Not all with great success, mind you, but they rarely stopped trying.
I’ve learned that Spirit prefers hope over hopelessness too. Dynamic over static. Activity over passivity. But, But, But……where to start? it will take too long…I am too insignificant a player in the huge arena. And then I hear that voice again, small moves, Deb, small moves. I hear myself compelled to take action. Movement. Be it learning, creating, helping, stretching, giving…actions, small moves.
I know what my small moves look like. What do your small moves look like? I am convinced that #smallmovesmatter. I believe the Spirit knows how to fashion small moves into deep change. I don’t know how to do that but I am willing to make small moves and trust that Spirit knows what to do with them.

Some days the moves are indeed small, but never unimportant. Thanks Deb
