Treading or Swimming?
Treading or Swimming? by debgrant
I don’t know whether I am treading water to stay afloat or actually swimming in a meaningful direction. Considering the fact that it has been too hot even to go to my neighborhood pool, I’m enjoying whatever splashing around I can manage.
What I have been up to:
Feeling guilty: I haven’t posted more on ELOGOS. I have great excuses - other projects, however, I am still pondering what a more focused theme for ELOGOS would be. Always open to suggestions.
Barefoot Crossing: my 5-day-a-week Substack newsletter in which I write short conversation prayers based on the Daily Lectionary text for the day.
A Facebook Experiment: 9 random friends of mine accepted my invite to a month-long, private, FB group. Each day I posted a journal prompt to which group members could respond. When it ends later this month, I may write more here about what we learned from the experiment.
Watching Less News: I hate being uninformed and I hate feeling miserable. I ration my news intake.
Art-o-Mat: I am an artist for Artomat.org. I make little pieces of art that are sold through their refurbished cigarette machines throughout the country. One of my new series of pieces is called Flightless Birds Unlimited. They each have a call sign. The one I included in the photo with this post is Call Sign: Speedo. I’ve sold hundreds. It’s pretty cool.
Covenant of Water: (hmmm, that water theme for me again) This is a very long novel that spans generations of a family in India. I haven’t finished listening to it yet. It is a page-turner if you can say that about an audiobook.
Tom Lake: (water, again) A new novel by Ann Patchett. A friend of mine recommended her writing to me and I have become a fan. She also owns an independent bookstore in Nashville - Parnassus Books. She and her staff recommend books each week on FB. I trust their opinion more than Amazon or other Best Sellers lists.
Watering my neighbors’ outdoor plants while they are traveling to cooler places. I spend the hosing down time thinking about how noble I am.
Buying a new hot water heater: The old one died recently. I could have waited until winter. There is only hot water coming out of my cold water faucet. Getting old bites. Old appliances nip away at your fun.
Putnik on the Bridge: A new book of mine being published this fall. Putnik on The Bridge is a short memoir of a freighter voyage I took years ago. This book reads more like a sitcom, more funny, personal, and human than devotional or philosophical. Donations to help defray upfront costs are appreciated. Donations made in September will be matched and donors will receive a free copy on publication. Go to the Jazzwater Tip Jar to donate. Thank you!
Stay cool my friends,
